Sacrificial anodes are metals or alloys attached to the hull that
have a more anodic, i.e. less noble, potential than steel when
immersed in sea water.
These anodes supply the cathodic protection current, but will be
consumed in doing so and therefore require replacement for the
protection to be maintained.
Applications:
Aluminum anode is widely used for cathodic protection in off-shore environments
because of its lightweight nature, easy installation process, and
ability to be cast into different sizes. Unlike other types of
anodes, the stand-off anode does not come into direct contact with
the surface it is safeguarding, as it is installed protruding from
the surface. This unique feature enables the stand-off anode to be
more efficiently utilized throughout its lifespan, leading to an
anode utilization factor that can reach as high as 85 to 90%.
