Ytterbium oxide is a white powder, Molecular formula Yb2O3, which is easy to absorb water molecules and carbon dioxide in the air. Insoluble in water, dissolved in acids to form colorless salts, such as ytterbium sulfate, ytterbium nitrate. Ytterbium ions are also colorless, paramagnetic, and have a series of sharp line absorption bands in the near infrared spectrum, which can be used for quantitative spectral analysis of ytterbium. YbCl3 was reduced by hydrogen. Yb 2:2: green yellow bivalent yb 2: can be obtained, bivalent yb ions in aqueous solution unstable.
